Why a backup generator

Three reasons Valley homeowners don’t wait

Power outages around Winchester aren’t a once-in-a-decade event. Between summer thunderstorms, ice loading on the lines, and the occasional derecho rolling down out of the Alleghenies, the lights go out. A properly installed standby generator means it doesn’t matter.

Storms don’t take appointments

The 2012 derecho knocked out power for nearly a week in parts of Frederick County. Ice storms, microbursts, and downed trees hit the rural distribution grid hardest — exactly where most of the Valley lives. A whole-home generator starts itself within seconds of an outage.

Your home runs on more than light bulbs

Sump pumps. Well pumps. Septic. Heat. CPAPs and refrigerated medications. Home offices and hardwired internet. Modern households fail quickly without power — and a Generac unit is sized to keep the systems that actually matter running.

Insurance, resale, peace of mind

Buyers in this market notice. Insurers in this market notice. And so do aging parents, expecting families, and anyone who’s spent forty hours throwing out a refrigerator’s worth of food. A standby generator is the rare home upgrade you stop thinking about — until you need it.

What we install

Generac standby systems, sized to fit

We size and specify based on a real load assessment of your home or facility — not a sales sheet. The number on the nameplate has to match the way you actually live and operate.

How an install actually goes

Five steps, no surprises

Generator installs go sideways for predictable reasons — undersized units, missed permits, poor gas-line sizing, transfer switches wired wrong. Here’s the way we run them.

1

Free on-site assessment

We come out, walk the property, look at your panel, your gas service, your existing loads, and where the unit makes sense to sit. You get a clear sizing recommendation and a written quote — no high-pressure pitch, no “today only” discount nonsense.

2

Permits & gas-line coordination

We pull the electrical permit and coordinate with your gas utility (or LP supplier) on line sizing. Natural gas or propane, we know the drill and we’ll size the run correctly the first time.

3

Pad, gas, electrical, transfer switch

Concrete or composite pad, gas-line stub, conduit and conductors back to your service, and the automatic transfer switch installed at the panel. For most residential jobs we’re on site one to two days.

4

Inspection & commissioning

Electrical inspection from the local authority, then we commission the unit — fuel up, exercise cycle programmed, transfer switch tested under live conditions, mobile alerts paired to your phone.

5

Walkthrough & ongoing service

We hand it off properly: how to read the controller, what the alerts mean, how often to schedule routine service. We’re a phone call away when you need us — that’s how we built 50 years of business in this Valley.

Service area

Tri-county. Local crews.

We’re based right here in Winchester. We don’t subcontract our generator work to crews from Northern Virginia, and we don’t drive an hour to get to your house. If you’re inside the tri-county, you’re in our backyard.

Common questions

The questions we get on every site visit

What does a whole-home generator actually cost installed?+
For a typical residential installation in our area, all-in installed cost — unit, pad, gas-line work, transfer switch, permits, labor — runs in the rough range of $9,000 to $18,000+ depending on sizing, gas-line distance, and whether you’re on natural gas or propane. We give written quotes after the on-site assessment, not estimates over the phone.
Natural gas, propane, or diesel?+
If you have natural gas service, that’s almost always the right answer — no tank to refill, nothing to run out. On propane, we’ll size the tank and run; most homes need at least a 500-gallon tank for serious runtime. Diesel is generally for larger commercial loads. We help you make the call during the assessment.
How long does the install take?+
For a standard residential whole-home install, plan on one to two days on site once we have permits and the unit. Total project timeline from contract signature to running generator usually lands in the four-to-eight-week range, depending mostly on permit and inspection turnaround and parts lead time.
Do I need a permit? Will the county sign off?+
Yes — every install requires an electrical permit in Frederick, Clarke, and Warren counties, and the work has to be inspected. We pull the permit, coordinate with the local authority, and meet the inspector. You don’t deal with the paperwork.
How do I know what size generator I need?+
A real load calculation. We look at your panel, your appliances, your HVAC tonnage, your well pump if applicable, and what you actually want to run during an outage. Undersized generators are the single most common mistake homeowners make when shopping price first. We size it right.
What about ongoing maintenance?+
Generac air-cooled residential units run a self-test exercise cycle weekly. They need an annual service — oil, filters, a visual inspection — plus a battery roughly every three years. We can put you on a service plan or handle it on call. Either works.
Do you handle commercial installs?+
Yes. For commercial work we coordinate the whole thing — service-rated transfer switches, larger fuel runs, sometimes parallel switchgear, and the back-and-forth with the inspector. We’ve handled the full range from a one-doctor practice to small industrial facilities. Call and we’ll come out.
